CBC Radio Canada International ROOTS Competition

Everyone has a story to tell. Radio Canada International invites all Canadians and permanent residents to tell us about their origins by entering ROOTS (or its French-language cousin RACINES), its brand-new short film and multimedia production competition.

Deadline: March 7, 2010

The competition is open to amateurs and professionals alike, but you must be at least 18 years old to enter.

Simply submit a 3 to 8 minute work that speaks of your roots and touches on part of your history or an aspect of your culture. Entries can come in any form: fiction, report, documentary, animation, photomontage . . . And also in any genre: comedy, detective, drama, slam, art video . . . In short, we welcome anything unique, original, touching, or surprising that might captivate viewers and Internet users, and catch a jury’s eye!

In spring 2010, the juries appointed by Radio Canada International will select the works that best meet competition criteria: consistency with the theme, originality, artistic value and technical quality. The public will also be able to vote online for their favourite entries. A total of eight recipients (four for each language) will share prizes, to include high-tech gadgets such as Sony camcorders, Apple computers, iPod Touch players and iPhones.

The ROOTS competition - and its French-language counterpart RACINES - is another in a long line of Radio Canada International special projects, which have resulted in such Web series as J’adopte un pays, Voir double, L’érable à palabres as well as the Migr@tions and Digital Diversity competitions.

ROOTS gives all members of the community the opportunity to use sound and visuals to express how they feel about their past and their origins, while highlighting the contributions all cultures make to the great Canadian mosaic. Come one, come all-enter ROOTS, a Radio Canada International initiative, today.

The Essence of Zen and Percussion Art: Sound of the Ocean

A compelling, seamless work of rhythm and movement, Sound of the Ocean was created by U-Theatre under the direction of Taiwan based artists LIU Ruo-Yu and HUANG Chih-Chun. An intense physical and emotional experience, the work traces the cyclical journey of water from a drop to a stream, from a river to the ocean.

Five distinct yet beautifully interwoven sections evoke the sounds and sensations of water, its elemental cool surges, gentle ebbs, and insistent rat-a-tat-tats. The five are animated by a theatrical tension devoid of explicit narrative. It is propelled by rhythms beat out on temple bells, gongs, and skinned drums large and small. The collective expressive power of the group is made possible by the extraordinary technical and athletic prowess of the individual performers. Daring feats of speed and precision create huge dynamic arcs ad the piece moves from one section to another.

Sound of the Ocean expresses the ongoing search for an artistic form that captures the essence, the preciousness, of life. With a spare grace and clarity, it illuminates U-Theatre’s creative process which centres on the concentric relationships of individual to the collective, and the larger natural and spiritual environments. Since its premiere in 1998 at Avignon Festival in France, Sound of the Ocean has been perfromed more than 120 times around the world.

Sat, 3/13/2010 at 8:00 pm
